While reduction in workplace injuries is the foremost goal of occupational risk prevention, there are measures that employers and insurers can take to mitigate the impact of a workplace injury once it occurs.  In the US, disability management and early return to work have become key aspects of a post-injury mitigation strategy.

Investments related to the safety and health of workers have in the past often been regarded as a burden for business, impacting negatively on their competitiveness.  Unfortunately this negative view still prevails and has been expressed strongly by some employers and politicians in countries and regions affected by the current economic crisis.
