ABSTRACT
After the explosion of a tank that partially destroyed the hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene production plant from a Brazilian chemical factory, a consulting company was hired to carry through a HAZOP. Once their work ended, an ergonomist team was hired to analyse the operators’ activities. The main objective was to update the document describing and evaluating the occupational risks of this plant. This paper seeks to better understand different aspects related to the contribution of those two different approaches, HAZOP and ergonomics, to the plant’s safety system.

INTRODUCTION
The approaches centered on technical reliability, resting on analytical and probabilistic methods made outstanding developments particularly in industries with high risks, such as nuclear power, chemistry or aeronautics [1],[6].
