El iceberg de las competencias: mostramos sólo el 15% de lo que somos

Analizar la parte oculta es imprescindible identificar y evaluar una competencia

Cuando hablamos de competencias debemos tener en cuenta que hay características de las personas (habilidades y conocimientos) que son necesarias, pero no suficientes para garantizar un desempeño excelente y que hay otras características subyacentes (rol social, autoimagen, rasgos, motivos) que son las que realmente aportan un plus que garantiza la excelencia y el éxito a largo plazo. Muchos autores (Spencer & Spencer, McClelland, …) utilizan la metáfora del iceberg para explicar el modelo de competencias y describir lo que vemos y no vemos de una persona, indicando que mostramos sólo el 15% de lo que somos, mientras que el 85% restante se mantiene oculto bajo la superficie, invisible para el resto. Es precisamente esta parte oculta en la que hay que reparar a la hora de identificar y evaluar una competencia.

Los conocimientos y las habilidades son más fáciles de adquirir y desarrollar, requiriendo menos tiempo y esfuerzo en general. El rol social, la autoimagen, los rasgos y los motivos son más difíciles de desarrollar y por tanto requieren de más tiempo y esfuerzo. Goleman llama a estos niveles inferiores del iceberg aptitudes emocionales que conforman la Inteligencia Emocional.
